Gwendolyn Bright

Painter, poet, and mama to Matilde Zadie, Gwen is a California native full-spectrum doula trained at Natural Resources and by the Bay Area Doula Project in San Francisco. She has a strong commitment to reproductive justice and an insatiable need to plug into storytelling of all kinds. She is the founder of Bright Birthing and has attended many births in and out of hospital since 2010 (somewhere in the mid 80s at last count).

Her big-picture focus has been engaged through volunteer work with the Jefferson Area Department of Health Improving Pregnancy Outcomes Workgroup and Birth Matters Virginia. With an eye for detail Gwen helped for several years to produce juicy, highly-polished content with the quarterly magazine SQUAT Birth Journal. These days life consists of  extended breastfeeding, wonderful toddler activities in town such as parent-child class at Charlottesville Waldorf School, PB&J gymnastics at Carver Rec Center and Blue Ridge Music Together. Gwen and her husband Austin will be welcoming baby #2 in March 2019.

Along with a degree in literature and religion and work toward a Masters in traditional Chinese medicine, Gwen's additional studies have included Jane Austin's Prenatal Yoga Teacher training; Essentials of Prenatal Massage with Dominique Clothiaux; Trauma to Triumph with Nurture in Richmond; and Penny Simkin's When Survivors Give Birth. In 2018 Gwen completed postpartum doula training with Cynthia Jordan-Fisher and Dianne Bearinger of Month 10 and Nearby Baby.

During maternity leave from attending births, Gwen looks forward to continuing to provide postpartum doula services, henna blessings and other support as she’s able. Reach out to connect!
